Top 10 July Events and Things To Do on the OBX 

July is here and summer is heating up here on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. While you can certainly fill your days with all of the fun in the sun, sand and surf your heart desires, we also suggest that you get out there and go to some of the fabulous local OBX events and festivals that are happening in July. There's a little something for everyone of every age and interest, that you can be sure of. The hardest part is deciding exactly how to spend your precious time on our shoreline.

We've rounded up the 10 best things to do this July including fun and festive Outer Banks events and popular festivals. We hope to see you this month on the beaches and around town. 

1. Fourth of July Fireworks & Independence Day Events Fireworks

From small-town festivals to big fireworks displays, the Outer Banks has all you need to celebrate July 4th in true beach style. However you want to celebrate the Independence Day, you'll find it here on the OBX.

2. Outer Banks Beer Mile 


July 5, 2017 @11a.m.

Outer Banks Brewing Station, Kill Devil Hills

Get your run on this summer and fun while you're doing it. Join the Brewing Station crew for an Independence day themed beer mile. Backyard party, chip timing and T-shirt included. This is an adult 21 and over only social run. Prizes are awarded to the fastest male and female overall. Wear your Holiday finest, costume contest judging for most creative. Late registration and check-in from 10-11a.m. on Wednesday July 5th.

3. BIC Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Races Stand Up Paddleboard


July 6, 2017 @10a.m.

Kitty Hawk Kites, Town of Duck

A series of free stand-up paddleboard races featuring BIC’s One Design race style SUP. This event is a fun and family-friendly competition. Brief clinics are held prior to each race, making this series great for beginners and experts alike. See you there!

4. Island Art Show

July 6, 2017 @10a.m. to 5p.m.

Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center

The event hosts over 20 local Outer Banks artists and crafters showing and selling their work-including everything from fine local art and prints to woodworks, surf art, seaglass jewelry, handmade soaps, hula hoops, photography and more. Enjoy live music at the show along with live art happenings at Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station and more. Admission is free, just save a few dollars to buy a raffle ticket or two and each Island Art Show is a benefit for a different local cause. 

5. Shark Awareness Day Shark Awareness


July 14, 2017 @10a.m. to 3:30p.m.

NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island, Manteo

Join the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island for a sharky celebration! Play jawesome games, watch fin-tastic movies, and see the sharks get a snack. Learn about the threats these ocean predators face and what you can do to help protect them. This event is included with regular admission. Check it out!

6. Wright Kite Festival


July 15-16, 2017 @10a.m.

Wright Brothers National Memorial, Kill Devil Hills

Take flight with Kitty Hawk Kites where history was made at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Enjoy large display kites filling the air, free stunt kite flying lessons, and a kite making station for the kiddos. Admission to the park is required but festival participation is free for everyone.

7. Outer Banks Skim JamSkimboarding


July 15-16, 2017 @ 8:30a.m.

Jennette's Pier, Nags Head


Skim USA is a youth focused organization dedicated to promoting the sport of Skimboarding. SkimUSA works closely with local surf/skim shops and a core of dedicated volunteers to run competitions in Florida, North Carolina, Delaware and New Jersey. While a large part of their mission is to offer skim competitions, they also fund a scholarship program where each summer they award $1000 scholarships to two college bound SkimUSA members. Each year four members are chosen to represent Skim USA on our youth team. Team Skim USA is an elite group and an athlete has to be at the top of their game both in and out of the water to make the cut.

8. Wicked Tuna Season 4 Premier Party

July 23, 2017 @5:30 to 9p.m.

Pirate's Cove Pavilion, Manteo

All four of the North Carolina captains will be here including: Greg Mayer, the winner for the last three years, Britt Shackelford, Charlie Griffin and newcomer Nick Gowitzka. Tickets are $35 in advance for adults; $15 for kids 4-10; kids under 4 free and includes dinner, Q&A with captains; autographs; viewing of last episode of the 2016 season as well as the first episode of 2017 season, which debuts on National Geographic on Sunday, July 30. 9. Light Up the Night in Rodanthe

July 25, 2017 @8:30p.m.

Waves Village Watersports, Rodanthe

Join Kitty Hawk Kites in Rodanthe and enjoy a relaxing evening on the sound. Participate in free NOCQUA kayak and paddleboard demos (weather permitting), have fun with light-up games and toys, and a enjoy movie under the stars on a large inflatable movie screen. Don’t forget to bring a blanket! This event is free to the public. 

10. Annual One-Design Regatta 

July 29, 2017 @10a.m. to 5p.m.

Roanoake Island Maritime Museum, Manteo


The regatta is open to Optimist, 420, Sunfish, Topaz UNO and Topaz ARGO sailboats and is held on the Manteo waterfront in Shallowbag Bay.  Registration begins at 10a.m. with the first race starting at noon. An entry fee of $20 per boat is required to enter and includes one dinner and one t-shirt. Following the racing are dinner and awards presented to the top three boats in each class. This is a great family event and exciting regatta.  The venue is perfect for the observer on the deck of the Marshes Lighthouse deck. It is the perfect spot to cheer your favorite sailor.
