Bye-bye July, hello August! The fun in the sun and summer beach season continue on the OBX with awesome things to do this month. Find out what's happening near your Outer Banks rental and go explore a little bit of the local flavor by attending an OBX festival or special event during your beach vacation. Kids Frenzy Fishing TournamentKid Fishing

Every week of the summer on the Outer Banks

Avon Fishing Pier

Beginning on Mondays and ending on Fridays and running every week throughout the summer, this fishing tournament is for kids ages 4-13 and costs $5 per child. Each participant must register with the Avon Pier and the fish caught throughout the week is recorded. The biggest fish wins! The weekly winner is announced each Friday at noon. OBX Watermelon Fest

Jockey's Ridge Crossing, Nags Head

The Watermelon Festival is a fun-for-all-ages fundraiser benefitting The Outer Banks Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition and features games, music, food, prizes, and, of course, lots of watermelon, generously provided by Food Lion. Enjoy this timeless summer tradition and help keep OBX bicyclists and pedestrians safe! Admission to the festival is free, but participation in the games and watermelon activities varies in cost.


OBX Pirate Festival

August 9-10, 2017

Jockey's Ridge Crossing, Nags Head

Experience a pirate invasion at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing in Nags Head! Blackbeard’s Crew sets up a realistic 18th century living history encampment and teach scallywag school. Pirates also make appearances at some of your favorite Outer Banks restaurants. Arrr you going to join in the buccaneer fun?

August 9-11, 2017 at 10:30a.m.

Festival Island Park, Manteo

What do you get when you mix a group of pirates, a carefree surfer, a mermaid and a talking Octopus?  Why Rainbow Puppet Productions A Pirate Party, of course! The show features vocal performances from the late Movie legend Mickey Rooney and his wife Jan. The couple also starred in the company’s 100th Anniversary Production of Toyland!  As a very special surprise treat, Broadway legend Carol Channing crashes the party by providing the voice to a bejeweled Octopus! Tickets are $5 per person for ages 3 and up; children ages 2 and under are admitted free.


Bic SUP One Design Series Paddleboard Races

August 10, 17, 31 2017 at 9a.m.

Whalebone Watersports, Nags Head

A series of free stand-up paddleboard races featuring BIC’s One Design race style SUP. This event is a fun and family-friendly competition. Brief clinics are held prior to each race, making this series great for beginners and experts alike.


Annual Youth Fishing Tournament

August 12, 2017 from 8a.m. to noon

Roanoke Island Maritime Museum, Manteo

It’s that time again for the 4th Annual Town of Manteo Youth Fishing Tournament. Registration is at 8am at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum in downtown Manteo and fishing begins at 8:15a.m. The event is free and open to youth 4 to 17 years old.  Awards are presented at 11:45a.m. with a cookout to follow. Bring your rod and reel, they have the bait!


Surfing for AutismSurfing

Jennette's Pier, Nags Head

The surfing event partners people with autism with therapists and surfers to enjoy some Outer Banks waves. Siblings of the child with autism get a fishing lesson, and fish for a bit, while individuals with autism head down to the sand and practice surfing skills in the sand before heading out in the surf. The surfing event is on Saturday and ends with a lunch for volunteers, family and individuals with autism.


New World Festival of the Arts

August 16-17, 2017 from 10a.m. to 5p.m.

Waterfront in Downtown Manteo

The outdoor show is free, family oriented, and open to the public. A shuttle bus is located at College of The Albemarle's Roanoke Island Campus on Highway 64 and is available for transportation to the Manteo Waterfront area. The free parking and free shuttle service is being provided by Dare County. The show exhibits original works from over 75 artists. Exhibiting work includes watercolors, oil & acrylic paintings, drawing, photography, jewelry, sculpture, and pottery. Admission is free!


Virginia Dare Faire & Birthday Celebration

August 18, 2017

Various locations in Manteo

The Lost Colony and The National Park Service joins forces in a special Virginia Dare Faire on the grounds of the Fort Raleigh National Park Site on Friday, August 18th from 10a.m. to 1p.m. All aspects of the Faire are free to the public and families are encouraged to attend. The activities are educational and fun. For further family entertainment attend the performance of The Lost Colony that evening starting at 7:30p.m. More information is available on the website at or by calling the Theatre Ticket Office at (252) 473-6000. 

In honor of the 430th birthday of the first English child born in the New World on August 18, 1587, regular admission to The Elizabethan Gardens is reduced on August 18, 2017. Special celebratory general admission is $4.30 (youth and children are free) all day. Dare-inspired activities for August 18 from 9a.m. to 2p.m. include plant sales, Ask the Gardener, children’s programs, southern picnic lunch featuring fried chicken and fixin’s ($9 per person), and ice cream and cake. SUPtastic Waves Open Water RacePaddeboarding

August 19, 2107 at 9a.m.

Waves Watersports, Rodanthe

Test your paddleboard skills at this challenging 8-mile open-water race over the Pamlico Sound. Prizes and lunch at Good Winds Restaurant follow for all race participants. Cost is $35 per person.


2017 Surf and Sounds Chamber Music Series

Various Dates in August; 7:30-9:30p.m.

All Saints Episcopal Church, Southern Shores

The 2017 Surf and Sounds Chamber Music Series features five acclaimed musicians from around the country. Residents and visitors are invited to attend free concerts from All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores to the Dare County Art’s Council’s upstairs gallery from August 22nd - 25th. The series features chamber music performed by a piano quintet, flute quartet or string quartet depending on the venue and program.


OBX Summer Send Off Party

August 23, 2017 from 3-10p.m.

Festival Park, Manteo

The 1st annual OBX Summer Send Off (OSSO) is a celebration of the final week of the traditional summer vacation season and commencement of the local's summer. The event features local eateries, artisan vendors, handmade art and crafts, three touring bands including JJ Grey and Mofro, and much much more. The concert begins at 3p.m. (gates open at 2p.m.) and runs until 10p.m. Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge and can enjoy a musical instrument "petting zoo", roaming magicians and face-painting as part of the kid zone.


Ghost Crab Quest

Sea Ranch Resort, Kill Devil Hills

Every Sunday this summer, meet at the Sea Ranch Resort for the Ghost Crab Quest! All Quests are 1.5 hours long and include all of the equipment necessary to get an up close and personal encounter with Ghost Crabs. Enthusiastic and experienced Guides cater to the whole group, ensuring adults turn into kids and kids have the time of their lives.  Ghost Crab Quest can accommodate up to 20 participants, but just call if you have a bigger group.  While there is no "tag-along fee” it is recommended that chaperones consider becoming part of the group, but if not be ready to take a ton of pictures. Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center (just south of Liberty Gas Station)

Each event hosts over 20 local Outer Banks artists and crafters showing and selling their work. You'll find everything from fine local art and prints to woodworks, surf art, sea glass jewelry, handmade soaps, hula hoops, photography and more. Admission to the event is free, just save your bucks for supporting the local OBX artisans and crafters by buying a raffle ticket or two.
