Walking

Walk Away The Pounds

Did you know that walking barefoot on the beach is good for your health? Not only do you burn more calories walking in sand versus walking on a hard surface, but it also engages extra muscle groups. Talk about a calorie shredder. Whether you choose to go barefoot or slip on your favorite sneakers, walking on the beach is great exercise for any fitness level. From a leisurely stroll to a hard-core, heart-pumping power walk, you will love stretching your legs on the beach. Remember to carry a bottle of water to stay hydrated. If walking in the early morning, be sure to have a reflective vest or light for safety.

Cycling

Cycling

One of the best exercises you can do, and one that is easy for any age to do, is cycling. Cycling is a great low impact sport that helps your cardiovascular health and builds muscle. Of course, the other great thing about cycling around the OBX is you get to take in all of the island's beauty. Don't worry about going fast. Slow and steady is perfect for biking on the beach. This exercise is easy for any level cyclist.  Remember the basics of cycling safety. Always wear a helmet, and at night make sure to have a front and rear light. Remember to obey all traffic laws.

Don't wait until you've reached your goal to be proud of yourself. Be proud of every step you take towards reaching your goal.

Intermediate Exercises

Squats

Squats

Squats are one of those exercises that  looks easy, but you’ll quickly find out why this exercise is a favorite among trainers. In fact, many say it is possibly the best exercise you can do for all around fat burning and muscle building. Working your quads, hamstrings, and glutes, everyone who wants to look beach fit needs squats in their life. Squats can be done anywhere and can be done with or without weights. To do a squat correctly make sure to have your legs shoulder-width apart. Then drive your hips back until your thighs are parallel to the floor, pause for a moment and then return to a standing position. Repeat, repeat and well...repeat.

Sprints

Sand Sprints

Sand sprints take advantage of the beaches’ natural resistance training. SAND! Sprints are tough enough, but sand sprints help you burn a ton of calories fast! The constantly shifting sand means this exercise seriously works your legs and fires up the stability muscles in your core. The best part is this exercise burns a crazy amount of calories, as you power through the sand. Sand sprints will leave your legs a quivering mass of muscle, your heart pumping, and lungs heaving! You can do this with or without shoes. However, don't cheat! You want to stay away from the waterline and that nice hard sand. Nope, for this one, you need to find the soft and loose sand.

Swimming

Swimming

Swimming is often claimed to be the perfect exercise. With no impact, it's the perfect exercise for those with arthritis or nagging old injuries. Whether you choose to gear up with fins and snorkel, or prefer cranking out laps in a placid pool, no matter your choice, the benefits of swimming are undeniable. Lowering your blood pressure, great cardio training, and a full-body work out are just a few of the benefits. Remember that the sea is nature’s pool and comes with a few risks. Be aware of rip-tide warnings and never swim alone. Looking for an Outer Banks vacation home with a pool? Look no further! Click here.
