The summer beach season is here and we're celebrating the best of everything the Outer Banks of North Carolina has to offer you in the upcoming months. From the sparkling ocean waters and pristine sands to the OBX towns and local attractions, there are so many ways to fill your vacation days with fun and adventure. 

We're highlighting the best of the Outer Banks this summer. Here's what you need to know.

Summer Weather and Water Temperatures on the OBX

With average air temperatures in the low to mid 80s (Fahrenheit) and water temperatures in the 70s during the summer months, the Outer Banks weather is perfectly pleasing weather you're on the sand, in the ocean or sound, or exploring around town. 

Outer Banks Beaches with Lifeguards 


Currituck County Beaches
In the Corolla area, lifeguard stations are staffed daily from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day from 9:30a.m. to 5:30p.m.

The Town of Duck maintains lifeguard stations daily from May 1 to Oct. 31 from 10a.m. to 6p.m.

Southern Shores
Southern Shores staffs lifeguard stations daily from 10a.m. to 6p.m. at Hillcrest Drive and Chicahauk Trail from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and at East Dogwood Trail and 142 Ocean Blvd. from mid-June through mid-August.

Kitty Hawk
Kitty Hawk staffs fixed lifeguard stands daily at Byrd Street, Eckner Street and the Kitty Hawk Bath House access from 10a.m. to 6p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Kill Devil Hills
The Town of Kill Devil Hills staffs about 20 lifeguard stands daily between Helga Street and Eighth Street from 10a.m. to 5:30p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Nags Head
The Town of Nags Head operates 10 lifeguard stations daily from 10a.m. to 6p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore
Three locations along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore are staffed with lifeguards daily from 9a.m. to 5p.m. Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. The locations are:

  • Coquina Beach (across from the Bodie Island Lighthouse).
  • Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Beach (just north of the lighthouse).
  • Ocracoke Day Use Beach (half a mile north of Ocracoke Village).


Fishing on the Outer Banks

From surf fishing and pier fishing to fishing charters and deep sea excursions—and everything in between, there is no shortage of fishing options and adventures on the OBX. Drop a line and have some reel fun this summer.


Sea Turtle Nesting & Hatching Season

Sea turtle nesting and hatching season runs from May 1 through October 31 on the Outer Banks beaches. Thank you for being mindful of our beloved sea turtle population and for doing everything you can to make their nesting and hatching season a success. 


Dogs on the Beach

The Outer Banks beaches and towns are pet-friendly, but we just ask that you remember to check each town's pet policy and be familiar with it before you go. Leash laws and pooper scooper laws are in effect all year long.

Memorial Day on the Outer Banks

Kick off the symbolic start of summer with us on the Outer Banks and spend your days soaking up the sun, sinking your toes in the sand, and breathing in the salty air. Reflect on the true meaning of the day and visit some of the local historical sites during your visit. 

Rogallo Kite Festival at Jockey's Ridge

This free festival is held at Jockey's Ridge State Park and Jockey’s Ridge Crossing. The Rogallo Kite Festival includes two days of kite flying to honor Francis Rogallo, NASA scientist and inventor of the flexible wing. His inventions started the sport of hang gliding and his designs have carried over into the stunt kites, power kites and hang gliders that are flown today. Come out and see large kite displays, learn to fly various kites, kitemaking, and more fun activities!


Father's Day

Give dad the best Father's Day gift ever: the beach! Plan for a day filled with all his favorite things and just spend quality time together in a beautiful place. 


Soundside Summer Fun Fair

Come out to the Soundside event site in Nags Head, June 15th-18th from 5pm-11pm for good, old-fashioned carnival fun. Bring friends and family to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of a carnival with fabulous rides for all ages, including a giant Ferris wheel, games and food concessions, such as cotton candy, funnel cakes, chicken-on-a-stick, and more!


Fourth of July Independence Day Celebrations on the Outer Banks

Celebrate Independence Day in true OBX style with beach fun, fireworks and more. Join us this July 4th!


Wright Kite Festival

Take flight with Kitty Hawk Kites where history was made at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Enjoy large display kites filling the air, free stunt kite flying lessons, and a kite making station for the kiddos. Admission to the park is required but festival participation is free!


Light Up the Night in Rodanthe

Join Kitty Hawk Kites at Waves Village Watersports Resort in Rodanthe and enjoy a relaxing evening on the sound. Participate in free NOCQUA kayak and paddleboard demos (weather permitting), have fun with light-up games and toys, and a enjoy movie under the stars on a large inflatable movie screen. Don’t forget to bring a blanket! This event is free to the public.


OBX Watermelon Fest

The Watermelon Festival is a fun-for-all-ages fundraiser benefitting The Outer Banks Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition and features games, music, food, prizes, and, of course, lots of watermelon, generously provided by Food Lion. Enjoy this timeless summer tradition and help keep OBX bicyclists and pedestrians safe. Admission to the event is free, however participation in games and watermelon fun varies in price.


OBX Pirate Festival

Experience a pirate invasion at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing in Nags Head. Blackbeard’s Crew will set up a realistic 18th century living history encampment and teach scallywag school. Pirates will also make appearances at some of our favorite local restaurants. 


Manteo Youth Fishing Tournament

It’s that time again for the Annual Town of Manteo Youth Fishing Tournament on Saturday, August 12th. Registration is at 8a.m. at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum in downtown Manteo. Fishing begins at 8:15am. The event is free and open to youth 4 to 17 years old.  Awards are presented at 11:45a.m. with a cookout to follow. Bring your rod and reel…they have the bait!


Surfing for Autism at Jennette's Pier

The surfing event partners people with autism with therapists and surfers to enjoy some Outer Banks waves.


New World Festival of the Arts

The New World Festival of the Arts is held on Wednesday, August 16 and 17 from 10a.m. to 5p.m. on the waterfront in downtown Manteo. The outdoor show is free, family oriented, and open to the public. Free parking and free shuttle service is being provided by Dare County. The show exhibits original works from over 75 artists. Exhibiting work includes watercolors, oil & acrylic paintings, drawing, photography, jewelry, sculpture, and pottery.


Virginia Dare Faire

The Lost Colony and The National Park Service join forces in a special Virginia Dare Faire on the grounds of the Fort Raleigh National Park Site on Friday, August 18 from 10a.m. to 1p.m. All aspects of the Faire are free to the public and families are encouraged to attend. The activities are both educational and packed with entertainment value. For more family fun, attend the performance of The Lost Colony that evening starting at 7:30p.m.


OBX Summer Send Off

The 1st annual OBX Summer Send Off (OSSO) is a celebration of the final week of the traditional summer vacation season and commencement of the local's summer. The event features local eateries, artisan vendors, handmade art and crafts, three touring bands including JJ Grey and Mofro, and much much more. The concert begins at 3p.m. and runs until 10p.m. Children 12 and under admitted free of charge and can enjoy a musical instrument "petting zoo", roaming magicians and face-painting as part of the kid zone.


Labor Day

Celebrate the unofficial end of summer on the beach. Soak up the fun in the sun and savor the end of summer on the Outer Banks doing all of the things you love with the ones you love the most.
