outer banks oregon inlet bonner bridgeThe build-up of sand around the Bonner Bridge has increased so much that there is talk about closing down access to recreational and commercial boat traffic. There just is not enough ocean depth for most vessels to pass through safely. If the area is closed, this would hurt the Outer Banks drastically. This is the only route to the Atlantic ocean between Hampton Roads and Hatteras Island.

President Obama earmarked $1 million for dredging but this is not near enough to get the job done. Cost estimates are up around $10 to $20 million to complete the project.
