Kitty Hawk Kites expands to Jarvisburg

Kitty Hawk KitesKitty Hawk Kites plans to expand its popular hang gliding school to include grassy airstrips in Jarvisburg, where it could attract tourists from the Outer Banks and boost the local mainland economy.

Flights are set to begin next spring on 75 acres behind The Cotton Gin, a clothing and gift store on U.S. 158.

For months, a few neighbors protested that the light towing aircraft would be too noisy, the high-flying gliders would distract traffic on U.S. 158 and cause accidents, and waterfowl would flush from the nearby marshes, diminishing good hunting there.

But other neighbors and business owners support it.
