Four Must-Try Restaurants on Cape Hatteras

Dining out is always in the plans when on vacation.  Hatteras, NC vacation rentals have nicecouple at restaurant sized fully equipped kitchens but let’s face it – Mom is on vacation too, so why not plan on eating out a few times.  There are great locally-owned places to eat on Hatteras Island – here are four of our favorites that everyone loves.

Atlantic Coast Café, 25150 Highway 12, Waves.  This is definitely that place that has something for everyone.  Atlantic Coast Café is open at 7:30am to serve a fantastic breakfast until 11am then the rest of the day is available for lunches and dinners that make this a favorite on Hatteras Island.  It sits on Pamlico Sound and offers indoor and outdoor dining which is almost always cool with breezes coming off the Sound.  Most people who spend vacations on Hatteras Island always make at least one stop (if not two or three) to the ACC for any meal.  At breakfast, everyone seems to love hash browns, while at lunch and dinner, the favorite seems to be fish tacos and fresh seafood entrees.  Be sure to put the ACC on your list while here.

Billfish Bar and Grill, 58646 Highway 12, Hatteras.  Located at Teach’s Lair Marina, next to the ferry to Okracoke, Billfish Bar and Grill is a great place to have lunch and dinner.  One of the best parts is the ability to arrive by land or sea.  So many love to dock at the marina, hop off the boat and enjoy drinks and great food.  The menu accommodates everyone including a spread for land lovers and sea farers, and yes, kids too.  It is also a great place to have some nice "grown-up” time if you can get away from the kids for a while.  They have a wonderful bar with fun drinks, nice wine, and of course, cold beer.  The seafood is local and the dishes are excellent no matter what you order.  We always recommend this place to our guests.  One trip and you will see why!

Frank’s OBX Dog House, 25972 Hwy 12, Rodanthe.  You know that feeling.  You are sitting on the beach or coming in from a morning of fishing and you get that yen for a hotdog.  And, on Hatteras Island, the place to go is Frank’s OBX Dog House.  This place is exactly what you conger up in your mind when thinking of a truly local spot on the OBX.  Open from 11am to 6pm, you can get just about any kind of dog you want from plain with a little ketchup to almost anything you want on it.  Oh and they are so good!  It is common to see diners get a couple of hot dogs simply because one is not enough and they are cheap.  This is a favorite stop for most everyone especially those who are guests at our Rodanthe NC vacation rentals.  And if you have kids?  Frank’s Dog House is on like Donkey Kong!   Plan on the kids begging to go to the Dog House!

Pop’s Raw Bar and Restaurant, 48967 NC 12 Hwy, Buxton.  Pop’s Raw Bar is a favorite among locals and visitors.  Located towards the southern end of the OBX in Buxton, this is the epitome of a local "joint” where you can get a dozen oysters on the half shell and an ice cold beer just as quickly as you can get a great burger and fries.  If you read any review, the top thing you notice is how locals eat at Pop’s – that tells you everything you want to know about it.  It has good food at a reasonable price and a very local atmosphere.  Plan on eating here a couple of times.  We love Pop’s and you will too.

Other Dining Options

In addition to these favorites, there are other dining options along Cape Hatteras.  From pizza and pasta to even more local seafood restaurants, your Hatteras vacation can be all about dining out and letting someone else do the cooking!
