Best Soundside Accesses on the Outer Banks

The beautiful Atlantic Ocean that boarders the Outer Banks gets its fair share of attention, and for good reason. It has created some of the most pristine beaches on the east coast. However, the sound that boarders the Outer Banks to the west is a great place to spend time when in the area. The sound’s shallow, calm waters create the perfect place to enjoy a long list of watersports or for children to swim safely. Read below to learn about some of the Outer Banks’ best sound accesses.

Child in the Water

Old Swimming Hole

Located on the north end of Roanoke Island is the Old Swimming Hole. The area offers a beautiful gazebo, soundside beach, playground, and a stellar view of the island’s west side. If you are looking for a place to go for a swim, stand up paddle, or kayak, check out the Old Swimming Hole!

Canadian Hole

This Hatteras Island sound access gives lovers of the outdoors a location that offers it all! Canadian Hole has a relatively long stretch of sandy beach and is ideal for windsurfers or kiteboarders. Furthermore, the water along the shoreline is very shallow which makes it the perfect place for children to swim. One of the characteristics of Canadian Hole that makes it so unique is the fact that it is just a short walk from the ocean. If you want to experience the ocean and the sound on the same day, this access is the place for you!

Harvey Sound Access

Just south of the Nags Head event site is the Harvey Sound Access. Ample parking and a gazebo offer a convenient location for those looking to head out on the water on their non-motorized watercraft. The Harvey Sound Access is ideal for launching a SUP, kayak, or kiteboard as there is a shallow cove that gives water sports enthusiasts ample room to prepare before they begin their adventure. It is also a great place to simply enjoy a picnic overlooking the Roanoke Sound! Take advantage of this beautiful Nags Head sound access.

Jockey’s Ridge Sound Access

If your family is looking for a great place for the kids to swim in the heart of Nags Head, the Jockey’s Ridge Sound Access is a great option! Heading south on the bypass (South Croatan Highway), take a right on Soundside Road south of Jockey’s Ridge. Once you arrive at the Jockey’s Ridge Sound Access, your family will enjoy a sandy beach and calm water. This access is a great option when the ocean is too rough for children to swim. Like the Harvey Sound Access, it’s only a short drive from any Nags Head Vacation rental.

Duck Town Park

In addition to the spectacular boardwalk, gazebo, and amphitheater, Duck Town Park also offers a public sound access. While it’s not an ideal soundside beach, the access is a great place to launch a kayak or canoe. Head to Duck Town Park to enjoy the sound while in Duck!

The Whalehead Club

Enjoy the sound at a historic location at the Whalehead Club. This Corolla destination should be a part of any Outer Banks vacation. The Whalehead Club offers locals and visitors a convenient boat ramp to enjoy. Take a break from the beach and head out on the Sound in Corolla!
