5 Great Calorie Shredding Events to Help You Stay In Shape this Holiday Season

Halloween is over and now, like it or not, we are officially in the Holiday Season and that means holiday parties, work gatherings, and all those delicious treats that somehow find their way onto our plates. Have no fear! The OBX may be famous for our incredible seafood and a wide variety of restaurants, but we also have some great events to help you manage all those holiday indulgences. The months of November and December have some of the best weather on the OBX and whether you're here on holiday or just visiting for a day there are plenty of great ways to enjoy all the OBX has to offer and still stay in shape. Here are 5 great events that let you walk, run, or jog those holiday calories away. So get out those walking or running shoes grab some water and let's get ready to shred those holiday calories away.
1. TowneBank Marathon & Southern Fried Half Marathon
Let's go ahead and get a jump start on fighting the holiday weight gain by signing up for one of the many events during the weekend of the TowneBank Marathon or Southern Fried Half Marathon. Now don't be discouraged or intimidated by the title of the event. This event has plenty of events for both the beginner and the expert. Taking place over three days from November 10, thru 12 this is more than just a running event, it is an OBX community event! No matter whether you're a participant or a spectator you can't help but have a blast during the weekend of November 10th. Live bands line the streets, neighbors get together with food, and often in costume to cheer on the runners. In short, this is one of the best annual events on the OBX showcasing the infectious local spirit.
The course runs through the village of Kitty Hawk, the historic Kill Devil Hills, (home of the First Flight), through the incredible maritime forest of Nags Head, and finally the equally historic Town of Manteo. The scenery along the course is worth the effort alone! The Outer Banks Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifying race and includes something for everyone of every ability level including the Southern Fried Half Marathon, Southern 6,

2. 22nd Annual Advice Turkey Trot
The 22nd annual running of the Advice 5K Turkey Trot happens every Thanksgiving morning. This event gives you a chance to get that metabolism fired up so you can enjoy an afternoon of guilt-free binging on turkey and stuffing. This year the event has a new staging area at the Scarborough Lane Shoppes. The official start time is November 23 at 9:00 am. This is a non-sanctioned 5K run/walk open to all ages and abilities. The winner gets a pumpkin pie and yes we mean an actual pumpkin pie! After the event, there is a party sponsored by Outer Banks Popcorn Shoppe, Sweater Box Confection, and Wave Pizza Cafe, if those aren't places worth running towards we don't know what are. 3. 5th Annual Festivus Road Race
Make your way up to Southern Shores on December 9th for the Festivus Road Race. Begining at the Markert Place Shopping Center in Southern Shores this event is sure to get the blood flowing and is also sure to give you a few laughs. Honestly, you just have no idea what you might see at this event. Running next to someone in their favorite Christmas Sweater or wearing Rudolf's red nose is not uncommon. These folks know how to have a good time. The course takes you through the quaint little town of Southern Shores boasting beautiful live oak lined streets and Spanish moss-draped trees. The scenery alone is worth the registration fee. This event also offers some great options for every skill level. Take to the road on the 10k loop, or go at a slower pace and do the out and back 5k. for the little ones, there is the Little Elf 1/4 mile or the Jingle Jog 1 mile run. 4. Surfin' Turkey 5k & Puppy Drum Run
Starting at the Hatteras Village Civic Center at 8 am on Thanksgiving Day this event is sure to get the blood flowing. Get ready to trot away the morning in the company of some fellow runners, walkers, and joggers on beautiful Hatteras Island. Not wanting to do a full 5k, well just hang around and at 9 am there is a 1/2 mile fun run (hey some exercise is better than none). The course meanders through the beautiful and historic fishing village of Hatteras and is worth the jog just to take in this amazing coastal town that is almost synonymous with the OBX. All of the proceeds from the race stay right here in the local community benefiting the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund (HIYEF) which provides funding for educational opportunities and enrichment for Hatteras Island Schools. 5. OBRC Outer Banks Gobbler 5k & Fun Run
If you are in the Nags Head area this Thanksgiving run on over to The Village at Nags Head at 8 am for the Outer Banks Running Clubs, Gobbler 5k and Fun Run. This is a fundraising run put on by the club each year an is their primary fundraiser. The course is an out and back design and takes you thru the beautiful Villages at Nags Head. Water stations will be provided along the course. After the race, there is a free light breakfast for the race participants. Note this event will take place rain or shine. These are serious runners in this club and a little rain won't dampen their spirits, so don't let it dampen yours in the event of rain. What are you waiting for? Sign up today!
