 10 Things To Do During Your Labor Day Vacation on the OBX

Are you spending a week or two vacationing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina over Labor Day? Lucky you! We have some great suggestions to make your time on our shoreline the best it can be. In addition to your time spent under sunny skies, in the salty sea and sound, and on the soft sand, there is plenty more fun to be found. All of our listed events are family-friendly and some of them are FREE!



Without further delay, here are some of our favorite local events occurring during the week of the Labor Day holiday. We hope you can make it to a few of them!


1. FREE Islands Art Show

  • When: Friday and Saturday, September 4-5, 2015
  • Where: 23186 Myrna Peters Rd, Rodanthe
  • What: Over 20 local OBX artists in one place and their amazing artistic creations for your viewing and buying pleasure. You'll find everything from fine local art & prints to woodworks, photography, upcycled art, collage, handmade hula hoops, handmade soaps & body products and more along with live music, lunch options and a raffle. 2. The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience

  • When: Saturday, September 5, 2015
  • Where: Outdoor Pavilion, 1 Festival Park, Manteo
  • What: Zoso offers the Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience with the embodiment of Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones in their spirit and tightly-wound talent and authenticity. For 20 years, they've been perfecting their live performances and delighting audiences while doing so. Bring chairs or a blanket, then sit back and enjoy the show. Tickets are $20 (plus fees), kids ages 10 and under are admitted free, and parking passes are available for an additional charge. This is a rain or shine event; no refunds.

3. Farmers' Market

  • When: Saturday, September 5, 2015
  • Where: Historic Manteo Waterfront
  • What: The Manteo Market is a farmers type market selling home grown, home baked, and homemade products.  George Washington Creek Park, adjacent to the Maritime Museum is the place to be from 8am to noon. It's a great place to stock up your Outer Banks vacation rental kitchen for the week with some yummy local flavor!

4. Ghosts of the Lost Colony

  • When: Tuesday, August 25 through Sunday, September 6, 2015
  • Where: Fort Raleigh National Park, 1409 National Park Dr, Manteo
  • What: An interactive theatrical experience designed to take you back in time to uncover the mysteries of Roanoke Island through firsthand encounters with the ghosts of those who lived there. You will be guided by Trevor Janzen, Founder of Astral Plane Investigations, on an interactive adventure exploring paranormal activity hotspots, around the grounds of the Waterside Theatre and Fort Raleigh National Park. 5. FREE Yoga

  • When: Tuesday, September 8, 2015
  • Where: Duck Town Green, 1200 Duck Rd, Duck
  • What: Free yoga class at 7:30am for students of all ages and levels offered by Duck Village Yoga. Bring a yoga mat or beach towel and water. Start your OBX morning off right and join in!

6. SAGA Outer Banks Triathlon

  • When: Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13, 2015
  • Where: Downtown Manteo
  • What: Individual athletes and relay teams exhibit various ranges of skill and expertise during this USAT sanctioned event. The enthusiasm of the athletes is inspirational for everyone at the site whether you're a volunteer, a spectator or part of the staff. Encouraging and cheering the athletes onward is a crucial part of the day, so come be part of it! It is 2 days of inspiration, excitement, relationships and achievement. 7. Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition

  • When: Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, 2015
  • Where: 6800 S Croatan Hwy, Nags Head
  • What: The 30th Annual Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition (OBSKC) is fun for the whole family. This regional kite competition brings some of the nation's best kite fliers to the Outer Banks. Check out all the high flying fun, watch massive display kites soar in the sky, or take part in stunt and power kite lessons. The final day of the festival concludes with a world class display of artistry with kite flying set to music, synchronized performances and more! The festival runs from 10am to 4pm.

8. Paint Your Own Mustang

  • When: Tuesday, September 8, 2015
  • Where: Corolla Wild Horse Museum, 1129 Corolla Village Rd
  • What: Paint your own mustang with a choice of three different sizes of wooden mustangs, from small to large. Smocks and paint are provided. Costs range from $5/$7/$15/$35. Painting activities are weather dependent. Fun for artists of all ages. All proceeds benefit the care and protection of the wild horses. Read more about the wild horses of the Outer Banks here.

9. FREE Maritime Crafts for Kids

  • When: Wednesdays in September
  • Where: 59200 Museum Dr, Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, Hatteras
  • What: Youth of all ages enjoy creating maritime coastal crafts while discovering snippets of local history.  All ages are welcome; all supplies are furnished. The best part: It's free! Wednesdays on September 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 at 10:30am – 12:00pm. Enjoy!

10. Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament

  • When: Thursday, September 10 through Friday, September 11, 2015
  • Where: 58372 NC Hwy. 12, Hatteras Village, Hatteras
  • What: Surf fishing along the beaches of Hatteras is like no other anywhere else in the world. Annually in September, the Hatteras Village Civic Association sponsors the Hatteras Village Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament with over 90 teams participating. The event is open to anyone interested in a fun filled weekend. It's worth checking out!
