Visit an Art Studio on Your Outer Banks Vacation
When many of our guests drop off keys after their Outer Banks vacation, they talk about how excited they were to find a special painting, beautiful sculpture or gorgeous piece of jewelry from one of our local Outer Banks artists. The Outer Banks definitely has its fair share of talented artists who live and work here. There are many outlets where their works of art are displayed and sold.
Here are some of our favorite artists whose work we always recommend our guests seek out:
Faye Davis Edwards
As a full time resident on the OBX, Faye Edwards works with paints and mixed media to create one-of-a-kind pieces that are spectacular. Her paintings have a local feel that gives visitors to the OBX the opportunity to take a piece of memory home with them through her work. She also paints amazing artwork on items like driftwood and creates collages using different media that are unlike anything else you will find. Her work is displayed around the shops and galleries in several OBX towns including the Greenleaf and Sea Dragon Galleries in Duck as well as the KDH Cooperative in Kill Devil Hills and the Silver Bonsai in Manteo.
Another well-known local artist is Rick Tupper. Although he has been exhibited and shown all over the world, his work has been primarily displayed at the Greenleaf Gallery since 1993. He focuses on painting landscapes, florals and dialogues all of which are beautiful in their own way.
Patty is an artist who works with stained glass. She creates some of the most beautiful stained glass panels and sun catchers with nautical, floral and nature themes. These are exquisite pieces of art that definitely have a local feel to them and can be seen at art galleries scattered about in the many of the OBX towns. They are the perfect ways to take a little of the Outer Banks home.
Living on the OBX for almost 20 years, John paints the most serene and beautiful paintings based on local settings. There is nothing like returning home with a painting of the beach, one of the historic landmarks or one of the local preserves. It is easy to get inspiration from all the surroundings. His work is displayed at Kill Devils Hill Cooperative and the KDH City Hall. Many people commission him for paintings they want to have.
Jim is a potter and creates the most unbelievable pieces that are displayed in many homes of OBX guests and residents. He came here years ago to work behind the stage at the Lost Colony performances on Roanoke Island…and stayed. Imagine that! Since 1981, his studio on Roanoke Island has been the home where his stoneware is originally created piece by piece. Much of his work is functional and includes bowls, plates, mugs and more. Whatever the purpose, his pottery garners a lot of comments and compliments. Over the years, his work has expanded to jewelry and even spread to include vine-woven baskets and more. It is definitely worth finding out more about Jim.
Tons of Amazing Talent
There is so much amazing talent from the artists on the Outer Banks. Many of our Nags Head, Kill Devils Hills and Corolla rentals have artwork by local artists hanging on the walls and sitting on tables. We always suggest to our guests to take some time during their Outer Banks vacation and enjoy the local art galleries as they showcase the work our artists create. It is the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon or to break up a week-long vacation filled with tons of beach time.
