The Island of Ocracoke is located just a short ferry ride south of Hatteras Island and is a favorite destination for vacationers and residents of the Outer Banks’ northern beaches alike. Ocracoke Village is the only section of the tranquil island that has stores and restaurants, but what this area of the island may lack in size it makes up for in a variety of fantastic shopping and dining options. Whether you are looking for an Outer Banks souvenir or a particular watersports product, the beautiful island of Ocracoke will provide you with whatever item suits your needs. In terms of dining options, Ocracoke Island is a paradise for the Seafood aficionado in your group.
Below are a couple of adventures and activities that any Ocracoke vacation should include.
Dine at Howard’s Pub: There is no restaurant more synonymous with a good time on Ocracoke Island than Howard’s Pub. While the pub is on the outskirts of Ocracoke Village it is only a short drive from the more populated Silver Lake area of the island. The restaurant’s classic pub atmosphere features college pennants and license plates from all over the world. Visitors have the option of dining indoors, in the screened-in porch, or on the sky deck. In addition to featuring Ocracoke’s only raw bar, the pub has a full menu which is sure to delight. Seafood, steaks, burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas are all made fresh to order. Staying true to its’ classic Outer Banks "Pub” name, the bar features 200 bottled import beers, 24 beers on tap, cocktails, and a full wine list.
Surf with Ride the Wind Surf Shop: Every Outer Banks vacation should include some time on the water! Surfing is a great way to spend time with family and friends. Ride the Wind Surf Shop is located in Ocracoke Village and offers surf lessons or camps for beginners or those simply wanting more instruction. For the surfer with some experience under his or her belt, Ride the Wind also offers surfboard rentals. Kayak and SUP tours are available if surfing isn’t for you. The store also has a full line of surfing and outdoor lifestyle clothing, sunglasses, surfboards, skimboards, SUPs, and boogie boards in stock.
Watch the sunset at Jolly Roger Pub & Marina: Enjoying a meal while taking in the sunset is the perfect way to end a long Ocracoke beach day. Jolly Roger Pub & Marina offers casual outdoor dining at an affordable price. Any visitor to Ocracoke Island who dines at this wonderful dockside pub will enjoy a view of Silver Lake accompanied by a beautiful sunset if the weather conditions and timing are in your favor. Jolly Roger’s menu boasts seafood dishes, nachos, and fantastic sandwiches to go along with the beautiful scenery.
Visit the Ocracoke Lighthouse: Take a break from the beach and immerse yourself in the nautical history of the Outer Banks. There is a variety of lighthouses in the area and Ocracoke light is certainly not to be overlooked as it has a very interesting history of its’ own. While this particular lighthouse is not open for climbing, the site is open for visiting daily.
Even if your family is not staying on Ocracoke Island, making a day trip is the perfect way to break up the week and check out a different part of the Outer Banks. A day trip from one of our Hatteras vacation rentals would be convenient especially in South Hatteras would be great options as well.
