The Best OBX Events and Things To Do in March

March is here and spring is soon to follow. The Outer Banks of North Carolina is ready! There is family fun for everyone in our OBX towns and on our beaches. The hardest part is deciding where to be! We've rounded up some of the best OBX events, festivals and things to do in March. You might want to have your calendar handy so you can start marking down these dates. There's a lot going on and we hope you can join in on all of the festivities this month.

St. Patrick's Day Events on the Outer Banks

March 9-12, 2017: First Flight Cruisers Shamrock Car Show & Poker Run

St. Patrick's Day Events
This car show features over 200 vehicles and is a favorite for local and out of town car enthusiasts. The 10th Annual Shamrock Show and Poker Run festivities include:
  • March 9th - Welcome Cruise and Dinner Mako Mike's
  • March 10th - Poker Run and music BK Shucker's TV given away
  • March 11th - Show at First Flight High School
  • March 12th - Participation in Kelly's St. Paddy's Parade

March 11, 2017 @8am: Kelly's Running of the Leprechauns 5K & 10K

Running of the Leprechauns registration is open for business! Thia event happens the day before the Annual Kelly’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade (see next event). Make your friends green with envy! Get a green shirt, finish medal, Irish Stew and Guiness at the post-race party. Yum, yum. The podium awaits the first male and first female finishers of each distance. Register here.

March 12, 2017 @1pm: Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on the Outer Banks

The OBX St. Patrick's Day Parade starts at Mile Post 11.5, at the intersection of Bladen St. and Virginia Dare Trail (Beach Road) and continues north to Driftwood Street. It's a free St. Paddy's parade and celebration at Kelly's with entertainment, awards and free hot dogs! Get your green and gold on and join in the festive fun!

March 19, 2017 @11am: St. Paddy's 1 Mile Beer Run

Join the Outer Banks Brewing Station crew for a Shamrock-themed beer mile. T-shirt and souvenir glass are included with the event. This is an adult 21-and-over-only social run with prizes to the fastest male and female overall. Costume contest judging for most creative follows the awards, so get festive. There is no pre-event day pick up and check-in is from 11-11:30am. Beverages are 12oz and runs are a quarter-mile. Admission is $20. You can register online here.

Outer Banks Food Festivals

March 11, 2017 @12-2pm: Cheese It Up at the Elizabethan Gardens

OBX Food Festivals
Enjoy wine and cheese as you create a one-of-a-kind take home summer container garden with Carl Curnutte and friends. Create a uniquely perfect planter that's sure to be the conversation of the party and also discover the art of matching cheese with wine to further impress at your next cocktail party. Members/Friends: $45. Non-Members: $55.

March 23, 2017 @6pm: NC Chefs Wine Dinner

A very special event to kick off the Taste of the Beach weekend features the very best of the Outer Banks and North Carolina state. Join the host, Basnight’s Lone Cedar Café, for what will be an unforgettable meal and evening. Three OBX chefs are joined by three top chefs from throughout NC to bring you a six-course dinner highlighting the cuisine of these award-winning chefs and their local ingredients, with each course perfectly paired with one of North Carolina’s finest wines. From the coast’s oysters, shrimp and fresh catch to foraged mushrooms and pastured heritage pork from western NC, and the fine produce from the farms in between, this will be a celebration of the foods and the people that bring it to table. This event will feature local and visiting chefs, some of which you may have seen on the Food Network, Top Chef, and UNC television!

March 23-26, 2017: Outer Banks Taste of the Beach (TOB) Weekend

Four days of Food, Drink and Fun happens this month on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Outer Banks Taste of The Beach Weekend is a fantastic way to sample the fare of many fine restaurants on the Outer Banks in one fun-filled, food-centric weekend. Casual chefs to full-on foodie fanatics will revel in innovative culinary opportunities offered up by members of the Outer Banks Restaurant Association. You can indulge in a fancy wine dinner one night and mix with the masses in an organic farm to fork experience the next. Or maybe an intimate cooking class with one of the area’s talented Chefs is more your speed. The TOB Weekend offers over 60 events over four days at over 30 different venues. Bring your appetite!

March 24, 2017 @noon-3pm: Outer Banks BBQ & Wing Showdown

Enjoy tasting and voting for your favorite Outer Banks BBQ and Wings from 15 of the areas best eateries! From traditional pulled pork and tender fall-off-the-bone ribs, to delicious saucy hot chicken wings! There is something for every carnivore at this 5th annual Taste of the Beach cornerstone event. The event is hosted at the newly located Soundside Event Site in Nags Head, which provides a wonderful outdoor (tented) park-like experience with great live music too. Your ticket price gets you an all you can eat experience of bbq, ribs, and chicken wings, and of course the right to cast your vote for the BEST OUTER BANKS BBQ of all! New this year is a beer garden where you can enjoy a variety of local and NC craft beers along with a selection of wines. Pepsi products are also provided for your refreshment. This is all included in your ticket price this year! At the door tickets should be available at $35 per person, but buying your tickets in advance for $28 is recommended.

March 25, 2017 @noon-3pm: OBX Chowder Cook-Off

Always one of the most popular events of the weekend, join us for the 8th annual OBX Chowder Cook-Off, featuring over a dozen local restaurants vying for the title of Best Seafood Chowder and $1,750 in prize money! You get to sample all of it and vote for the People’s Choice favorite. There is live music and a fun festival atmosphere for everyone. This is a kid and family friendly event. You may also bring a very well-behaved dog on leash.

March 26, 2017 @noon-5pm: Sysco Grand Tasting & Bartenders Bubbly Bash

The Sysco Foods Taste of the Beach Chefs Grand Tasting & Bartenders Bubbly Bash is the grand finale event and the hottest ticket in town with 18 restaurants along with the best beverage vendors to give you a culinary experience of a lifetime. Join in the festivities at the Port O’ Call Restaurant in the heart of Kill Devil Hills and taste your way through the Outer Banks in one location. Visit each restaurant booth and taste two or three samplings from each. Packed with many seafood and non-seafood choices, the cuisine at the Sysco Foods Chefs Grand Tasting is truly an experience to remember and the participating restaurants absolutely go all out to present their finest and most imaginative cuisine for your enjoyment, as well as impressing the judging panel in hopes to take home one of the prestigious TOB awards.

Through March 18, 2017: Outer Banks Community Quilt Show

Daffodil Festival

Vintage and antique quilts of all sizes are on display at the OBX Quilt Show at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo. Highlights include quilts made or owned by quilters from the area, and by those with close ties to the Outer Banks. A wide range of techniques including quilting, embroidery, applique’, and other needlework and embellishments are showcased. Have quilting questions? Knowledgable quilters are on-hand and available to answer questions and describe the featured quilts.

March 11, 2017 @12:55-5:15pm: NY Met Opera Presents: La Traviata

The broadcast of Verdi’s La Traviata will be presented live in select cinemas nationwide on Saturday, March 11 at 12:55pm ET; one of those cinemas is the R/C Kill Devil Hills Movies 10. Sonya Yoncheva brings her acclaimed interpretation of the doomed courtesan Violetta Valéry to live in HD audiences for the first time, opposite rising American tenor Michael Fabiano as her lover, Alfredo. Thomas Hampson sings one of his most acclaimed Met roles as Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s disapproving father, in a revival of Willy Decker’s staging conducted by San Francisco Opera Music Director Nicola Luisotti.

March 25, 2017 @12:55-5:15pm: NY Met Opera Presents: Idomeneo

The broadcast of Mozart’s Idomeneo will be presented live in select cinemas nationwide on Saturday, March 25 at 12:55pm ET; one of those cinemas being the R/C Kill Devil Hills Movies 10. James Levine conducts a rare Met revival of Mozart’s Idomeneo, set in the aftermath of the Trojan War. Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s classic production, which has its first Met revival in over a decade this season, stars Matthew Polenzani in the title role. The cast also includes Elza van den Heever as Elettra, Nadine Sierra as Ilia, Alice Coote as Idamante and Alan Opie as Arbace.

April 1, 2017 @9am-6pm: Daffodil Festival at the Elizabethan Gardens

Thousands of Daffodils (or "Daffodilly” – as the Elizabethans would say) were planted for this month-long celebration. Bloom peak and variety vary depending on the ever-changing Outer Banks weather and Mother Nature. This budding celebration seeks to provide inspirational displays and educational opportunities to encourage an appreciation of the art of gardening. Get spring inspired!

April 1, 2017 @11:30am: Easter Eggstravaganza in Kill Devil Hills

The Dare County Parks and Recreation annual Easter EGGstravaganza is held at the Family Recreation Park in Kill Devil Hills. This free family-friendly event features a wide variety of activities for children 10 and under including three separate age groups hunting for over 5,000 eggs. Enjoy pictures with the Easter Bunny, eggcellent games and activities including tattoos, egg/spoon races, sack races, bean bag toss, ring toss, pin the tail on the bunny, sidewalk decorating and much more. If inclement weather, all activities will take place inside the Youth Center.
