SUP Events on the Outer Banks
Stand Up Paddleboarding has grown in popularity over the past few years. SUP (aka paddle boarding) is one of the most fun water sports in which you will ever participate. For the average Joe, there is something about it that you cannot explain until you get out on the water on a paddle board. It is soothing and exhilarating all at the same time. You stand on the board paddling through the water while watching everything swim underneath your board. Paddle boarding has definitely become one of the most popular activities while on vacation in Outer Banks style.
Even though SUP stands for "stand up paddle,” SUP is the slang term used by most. Professional surfers have taken hold of this newer phenomenon and surf on a SUP board with a paddle and all. This extreme form of paddle boarding has become so popular that there are events and competitions all over the world. Talk about cool to watch!
The sport is also gaining popularity on the OBX. Here are some upcoming SUP board events on the Outer Banks:
OBX Paddle Palooza, May 31 – June 1, 2014, Frisco Woods Campground, Hatteras Island. Just reading about this event makes you want to hop on your board and head out for some quiet time and a good workout. In its fourth year, Paddle Palooza has become a huge fun event for everyone along the OBX. Sunset paddles, SUP yoga, field games and of course a paddle board race are what’s on tap for the weekend. The race itself is set to start at 10am with groups of all skill levels. Each group will paddle a one-mile loop in a nice stretch of water that is typically fairly calm. At the end of the day on Saturday, everyone enjoys a good ole pig pickin’ followed by a huge bonfire on the beach. Sunday winds down with fun beach games for the whole family. This is one of the most fun weekends especially if you love to paddle!
OBX SUP Series, Nags Head. The OBX SUP Series takes place over three weekends throughout the summer. It features contests and clinics on each weekend of the series including a day of ocean SUP boarding with races and contests and a day of flat water boarding with races and tours. Additionally, there are clinics for every level of SUP boarding whether you want to be introduced to the sport or want to learn some fun tricks or master paddling in rougher waters. The event dates are: June 28-29; July 26-27; and August 23-24. The OBX SUP Series is sponsored by Farm Dog Surf School and Wicked Oceans with some of the proceeds of the tournament benefitting Nags Head Ocean Rescue and the Surf Rider Foundation.
OBX Swim Club Open Water Swim-Paddle, July 6, 2014, Manteo. Back by popular demand, the Open Water Swim-Paddle is set with the addition of SUP boarding to the event. This means there will be a two-kilometer swim, a one-kilometer swim, and a 500-meter swim in addition to a two-kilometer SUP board race for individuals age 11 and up. The event takes place at the Ole Swimming Hole, a Dare County Parks and Recreation-maintained public swimming area just outside Manteo, N.C. in the Croatan Sound. Because it is on the Sound, the water is comparable to an open-lake swim and unaffected by the changing tides and waves however every so often wind does sometimes produce small waves. This is a fun event for those who love water sports and will hopefully remain an annual event for years to come. It is sponsored by the OBX Swim Club with the proceeds benefitting this organization.
SUP-Tastic Stand Up Paddle Board Race, July 12, 2014, Manteo. This is definitely a fun SUP boarding event with two divisions for the elite and recreational classes. The Sup-Tastic is a two to four-mile WPA (World Paddle Association) sanctioned stand up paddle board race that starts at the Festival Park Bridge in Manteo, NC then into Shallow Bag Bay and around Roanoke Island Festival Park. There will be a long and short course set up with both divisions racing on each course. SUP-tastic is sponsored by Kitty Hawk Surf Company which has all the information about participating in the race.
A Passion for SUP Boarding
Some people are simply drawn to the beach as opposed to the mountains. From there beach people have a strong desire to be out on the water. One time out on the water is all it takes to develop a passion for SUP boarding. There is nothing like it. And the opportunity to be on the OBX during one of these cool SUP boarding events is the icing on the cake.
