Downtown Manteo can be described as small, quaint and charming. The waterfront area of this town has been preserved by its residents and town officials based on a 52-page document called "the Manteo Way of Building: A Guide for Development”. This document explains how to preserved the look and feel of the community without compromising future growth. The restored and lovely waterfront/downtown area is an attraction in itself, with the boats sitting in Shallowbag Bay and the surrounding boardwalk and all the quaint shops, galleries and eateries. A delightful day can be spent enjoying the Manteo waterfront shopping. The heart of the town on the waterfront contains lots of gift shops, clothing stores, galleries, estate jewelry, antiques shops, bookstore, coffee shops…all within a few easily walkable blocks. It is also a great place for antique shopping with several shops both in and around downtown. After a long day of shopping, take a break on the waterfront boardwalk and watch the boats go by. There are several places to grab a bite to eat of the waterfront or just sit on a bench and take in the view. The boardwalk connects the Town boat ramp and marina, waterfront gazebo, playground and picnic areas with Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse and the George Washington Creef Boathouse on the Manteo Waterfront.
