Attend a Fishing Tournament on your Hatteras Vacation
Posted On Wednesday, May 07, 2014
More than likely, if you are a regular visitor to Hatteras Island, you like to fish. Who wouldn’t! One of the most popular ways to fish is right off the beach. Surf fishing is bountiful and entertains many beach-goers who have a desire to see what and how much they can catch. Plus it only requires a rod and reel…oh and some bait.
The waters off Hatteras Island are some of the best fishing waters around the Outer Banks because of the churning currents that intersect just off shore. Because of this, several fishing tournaments take place along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. A couple of tournaments that are coming up are the Four-Wheeler Plus Surf Fishing Tournament at the end of April and the Ocracoke Surf Fishing Invitational at the beginning of May. Both tournaments bring fishermen at all levels to the beaches of Hatteras Island in an effort to claim the bragging rights of "the biggest fish of the day.”
The Ocracoke Invitational, scheduled for May 1st, is in its 31st year and has been called "the most fun tournament” by area anglers. Even though it is a catch and release tournament, the teams have a fun day hanging out along the shores, casting their reels and telling stories of the big one that got away. Most of the participants are great friends who come out for the day with friends and family to enjoy a day on the Ocracoke beaches.
No matter what time of year, there are fish to be caught along the beaches of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. During April and May, the fish you are more likely to reel in are bluefish, channel bass, wahoo, striped bass, king mackerel, striped bass, grouper and a few others. All of these fish make for tasty meals that include freshly caught sea fare.
Whether you visit us in the fall, spring, or summer (winter can get biting cold on the beach, but you can do it), one of the best parts of surf fishing is that you can simply walk out the door and down the steps of your Hatteras vacation rental to spend an hour or even an afternoon casting and reeling your rod. Not only can you catch dinner, you can have one of the most relaxing afternoons of your vacations.
