  1. Jockey’s Ridge State Park: Explore the 426-acre park that is home to the East Coast’s largest active sand dune. With self-guided trails, year-round nature tours, a visitor’s center, a small gift shop, museum and more, Jockey’s Ridge makes for an exciting FREE day of adventure for the entire family. Bring a picnic and enjoy the site’s convenient picnic facilities and restrooms, bring a kite or hang glide off of the top of the dunes, or come during sun down and watch the beautiful sun set into the sound from your perch high above Nags Head. 2. Bodie Island Lighthouse: If you’re looking to explore the grounds of a lighthouse during your next beach vacation…you’re in luck…because the Outer Banks happens to sport not one, two, or three lighthouses but FIVE beautiful beacons for visitors to explore. If you are able to enter and climb the lighthouses there will be a ticketing fee, but if you just want to explore the beauty surrounding the lighthouse, the Bodie Island Lighthouse in South Nags Head is one of the best ones to visit during your Outer Banks vacation.

Enjoy a gorgeous photo op in front of the black and white striped light or take the nature walk along the side of the grounds and out into the marsh, which leads up to an impressive gazebo, perfect for bird watching and enjoying an angle of the lighthouse you can’t experience anywhere else. Keep your eyes peeled here, too, as there is a bald eagle or two that make their homes in the trees near the gazebo. For more information, click: here.

  3. Wild Horse Self-Guided Tour: Not many beach vacation destinations can claim to have wild roaming horses as a part of their local inhabitants, but the Outer Banks can! Do yourself a favor and head out to the northern beaches of Corolla and Carova where you can take to the beach in your own four-wheel-drive vehicle and explore the coast for yourself, with the chance to see the wild ponies up close and personal. At no cost to you, you could experience the chance of a lifetime!

  4. Kill Devil Rum Distillery Tour: If you find yourself in downtown historic Manteo on Roanoke Island, swing by the Kill Devil Rum distillery for a quick tour of one of the newest Outer Banks establishments. Stop by and explore for free the location that is bringing the tradition of rum back to the Outer Banks. For more information, click: here.

As the old idiom goes, money can’t buy happiness…and in these cases, happiness comes absolutely free! So during your next vacation, leave your Outer Banks vacation rentals behind and experience these good times to be had at no cost to you!
