Jeanettes Pier, Nags Head NC

Nags Head, NC

Nags Head is the oldest of the Outer Banks resort and vacation destinations; to many it is synonymous with the Outer Banks, NC. Since the middle of the 19th century families have been spending their summers in the seaside cottages and Nags Head Vacation Rentals that dot the oceanfront. There are several legends associated with the origin of the name Nags Head. The one most often told is that of early residents hanging lanterns from the necks of their horses, or nags, and leading them along the beach at night. Mariners would mistake the moving lights for passing ships and be lured into dangerous shallows. Once the ship ran aground it would be plundered for supplies by the beach dwellers.
